Our Approach

Play-Led, Child-Led, EYFS-Aligned

A approach that treats every child as capable and curious. Learning is led by their interests, not a fixed curriculum.

The Influence

Every Child Is Capable and Curious

The play-led approach, developed in post-war Italy, sees children as protagonists of their own learning. We draw on that in three core beliefs.

Children lead their learning

What fascinates your child today guides what we do tomorrow. We follow the "hundred languages" idea: children express understanding through art, movement, sound, storytelling, not just words.

The environment is the "third teacher"

Our rooms are designed as invitations to explore. Natural materials, open-ended resources, and space that changes with your child's interests, not static toys.

Parents are partners

You know your child best. Handovers, the Famly app, and key-worker conversations are built around genuine two-way dialogue, not one-way updates.

EYFS, The UK Framework

EYFS-Aligned

We're Ofsted-registered and follow the UK's Early Years Foundation Stage. That means every activity also covers the seven EYFS areas, we just do it through interest-led play, not worksheets.

  • Communication and Language, including Makaton signing (praised by Ofsted 2022)
  • Physical Development, daily outdoor and forest-school sessions
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development, key-worker relationships, emotional-regulation language
  • Literacy, stories daily, phonics play-based in preschool
  • Mathematics, counting, shape, pattern through cooking, building, songs
  • Understanding the World, forest school, kitchen visits, community walks
  • Expressive Arts and Design, messy play, sensory, music, role-play
What This Looks Like Day-to-Day

In Practice, Not Theory

Heuristic & Sensory Play

Baskets of everyday objects, wooden spoons, pine cones, metal bowls, that invite a baby or toddler to touch, bang, explore, and figure out.

Forest School

Regular sessions outdoors, mud kitchen, den-building, risk-benefit play. Builds resilience, concentration, and a real connection to nature.

Documented Learning

We observe and record what interests your child, not to test them, but to shape tomorrow's activities around what they love.

Real Conversations

Staff get down to child height. Questions like "what do you think will happen next?" matter more than "well done".

No Screens

No tablets, TVs or videos in any room. Your child's time at Handprints Nurseries is human, hands-on and real.

Key Person System

One staff member is your child's anchor, the person who knows their feeding, their mood, their growing-up milestones.

The EYFS Framework in Detail

Seven Areas of Learning & Development

The EYFS statutory framework defines seven interconnected areas of learning — three prime and four specific — that shape every planned experience at Handprints. Here's what that looks like in each of our rooms.

Personal, Social & Emotional

Prime area. Building confidence, self-regulation and warm relationships. Every child gets a Key Person, a settling-in plan and daily emotional check-ins.

Communication & Language

Prime area. Rich conversation, sustained shared thinking and Makaton signing alongside the spoken word. Story-time twice daily.

Physical Development

Prime area. Gross-motor climbing, balance and Forest School alongside fine-motor mark-making, tweezers and threading.

Literacy

Specific area. Phonics via a synthetic-phonics scheme in Preschool; daily story-time in every room; a lending library children take home each week.

Mathematics

Specific area. Counting through song, pattern-making, comparing quantities and shape recognition, embedded in everyday routines from snack time onwards.

Understanding the World

Specific area. Nature study on Forest School days, cultural celebrations across the year (Diwali, Chinese New Year, Eid, Hanukkah), and community visits.

Expressive Arts & Design

Specific area. Weekly music & movement, mark-making with real tools, role-play and open-ended art with authentic materials — not colouring sheets.

How We Plan & Assess

Rigour, Not Rigidity

Play-led doesn't mean unplanned. Behind every session sits a clear planning and assessment cycle rooted in the EYFS.

Weekly, room-level planning

Each room's team meets weekly to plan the following week's provocations against the seven EYFS areas and the current interests of the children in the room.

Learning journeys, kept per child

Every child has an ongoing digital learning journey on Famly — observations, photos, next-steps and progress against the Development Matters ranges.

Statutory two-year progress check

Delivered to every child between age 2 and 3, and shared with you and (with your consent) your health visitor — as required by the EYFS.

EYFS Profile at end of Reception year

Where relevant, we hand over a full transition summary to your child's Reception teacher so their learning journey continues seamlessly into school.

SEND early-identification

Our SENCo trains every keyworker to spot early signs of additional need and to work with parents (and, where consented, external professionals) to put a plan in place quickly.

Parent partnerships, formally

Structured parent consultations twice a year on top of daily Famly updates, an open-door policy on entry and departure, and stay-and-play sessions each term.

Ready For School, Ready For Life

Confident, Independent Children Who Thrive in Reception

The single biggest predictor of how a child settles into Reception isn't the alphabet or numbers to twenty; it's their independence, their confidence and the way they've learned how to learn. That's what our whole approach is quietly building, from the very first day.

Genuine independence

Coat on their own, shoes on their own, feeding themselves, tidying up, asking for help when they need it, managing their own toilet routine. The everyday self-care skills that make a Reception teacher's day so much easier, we practise them all here.

Confidence to have a go

Children who leave us aren't afraid of getting it wrong. That mindset (curiosity, resilience, a willingness to try) is what turns "she's shy in class" into "she's finding her voice". It's the piece schools consistently thank us for.

Early phonics and mark-making

Letters and sounds through play, name-recognition, mark-making moving into first letters, one-to-one number correspondence, counting through routines. The Reception "day one" curriculum isn't a surprise to them, it's familiar ground.

Sitting, listening, sharing

Small-group circle times, whole-room story sessions, taking turns at the water tray. The social-emotional skills that make classroom life work; we build them slowly, from the toddler room upward, so they feel normal by preschool.

A structured Reception year

Our preschool room mirrors the shape of a Reception classroom, focused table-top activities, planned adult-led sessions, self-registration, transitions between activities. The change to "big school" feels like a next step, not a leap.

A warm handover to their school

We complete the formal EYFS transition summary for every child and share it with their new Reception teacher. Where the school welcomes it, we visit the classroom with your child and walk them through the routines they'll meet on day one.

Parents often tell us their Handprints child arrived in Reception more settled, more independent and more confident than they'd expected. That's the outcome the whole approach is quietly building toward.

Qualified, Regulated, Accountable

The Team & Standards Behind the Approach

Our team is a mix of qualified Level 3 educators, Level 2 practitioners and apprentices working toward their Level 3, all led by experienced Room Leaders and our Nursery Manager. The setting is regulated by Ofsted, the local authority and the Department for Education, so every practitioner works to the same national standard whatever stage of their qualification they are at.

A qualified, growing team

Our practitioners are Level 3 qualified, Level 2 qualified or completing an apprenticeship toward Level 3 with us. Every keyworker meets or exceeds the statutory Level 2 minimum, and everyone continues developing on the job.

Enhanced DBS & Safer Recruitment

Every adult who works with children has an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check and is recruited through a full Safer Recruitment process.

Ratios matching or exceeding Ofsted

1:3 in the Baby Room, 1:5 in Toddlers, 1:8 in Preschool — the statutory ratios of the EYFS framework, applied as an absolute floor rather than a target.

Designated Safeguarding Lead on site

A trained DSL is on site at all times, with a deputy DSL to provide continuity when the lead is off — as required by Working Together to Safeguard Children.

Paediatric First Aid on every shift

Every staff member holds a full 12-hour Paediatric First Aid certificate — well beyond the minimum ratio required by the EYFS.

Ongoing CPD budget for every staff member

Every practitioner has a personal CPD plan — from Forest School Level 3 to Makaton, SEND, ELKLAN speech-and-language and beyond — funded and time-tabled by the setting.
